What makes San Antonio a great city to live is the variety of options families have when choosing an area of town that best suites their wants, needs and desires. Whether you want to experience living in the suburbs or in a trendy district of one of the nation’s biggest cities, each San Antonio district offers residents a unique set of features perfect and specific to their lifestyle.
Stone Oak:
Stone Oak sits just north of Loop 1604 and west of Highway 281. The area is known for it’s gated subdivisions, a great feature that offers residents privacy and security. This San Antonio district is one of the top 5 most affluent neighborhoods in San Antonio, but don’t let that fool you. There are a variety of homes in many price ranges depending on subdivisions within the Stone Oak area. There are several shopping centers throughout Stone Oak that are filled with specialty boutiques, restaurants and bars.
Most of the Stone Oak area feeds into the North East Independent School District, one of the top school districts in the San Antonio area.
Shavano Park:
Located within it’s own city limits, Shavano Park is nestled inside north central Loop 1604, not far from Stone Oak. Because it’s its own city, Shavano Park has a small, but active city council, fire Department and police Department. An older, yet affluent enclave of the San Antonio Metroplex, the original town of Shavano was established around 1881 and served as a stagecoach and rail stop between San Antonio and Boerne. The current population of Shavano Park is estimated to be 3,200. Shopping, restaurants and grocery stores can be accessed quite quickly thanks to Shavano’s prime location to two major highways in San Antonio.
Residents of Shavano Park are zoned into the Northside Independent School District.
Tri – Cities: Alamo Height, Terrell Hills, Olmos Park
Often considered one in the same, Alamo Heights, Terrell Hills, and Olmos Park are arguably the most well known areas in San Antonio. Often referred to as the “0-niners”, a nod to the last two digits of the zip code, residents of these areas live in some of the oldest, but wealthiest neighborhoods in the metroplex. The tri-cities are situated in the city’s inner north-central corridor just minutes away from Downtown San Antonio and the trendy King Williams and The Pearl Brewery districts. All of these areas are cities within the San Antonio metroplex, so they have their own city hall, post office, and police and fire force.
These neighborhoods are home to some of San Antonio’s most popular attractions like the McNay Art Museum, the Witte Museum, Brackenridge Park, Botanical Gardens, San Antonio Zoo, the exclusive San Antonio Country Club and Japanese Tea Gardens. High-end retail boutiques and gourmet restaurants can be found on almost every corner of Alamo Heights. This area is also a popular place for young business people as well as more mature folks who enjoy the finer things in life.
Homes among these small inner cities date back to the early 1920s. The well-kept architectural charm of these structures is hard to find in other San Antonio neighborhoods.
The Alamo Heights School District extends to all the tri-cities and is one of the top school districts in the state.
The Dominion
This master-planned community includes some of our city’s most expensive homes, as well as famous San Antonio residents like Coach Greg Popovich of the San Antonio Spurs, and at one time, WWE Star “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. The neighborhood is nestled in the hills just north central of the San Antonio metroplex, but still within San Antonio city limits.
The 1-10 corridor that The Dominion sits upon is booming with new restaurants, shops, and businesses sprouting up each day. The Dominion is located just minutes away from The Rim shopping center and The Shops at La Cantera, San Antonio’s premier mall.
The neighborhood is part of the Northside Independent School district with one of the top elementary schools in the district, Leon Springs Elementary School, just down the street.
Boerne
Situated just 15 minutes up 1-10 in the Texas Hill Country, Boerne is a historical, scenic Texas town founded in 1849. It boosts a main street, repurposed historical buildings, and small town good vibes. Throughout the year, Boerne hosts several parades, festivals and farmer’s markets for locals and tourists to enjoy.
This small town has quickly become a highly-sought after location for families in the San Antonio area because of it’s scenic charm, relatively inexpensive home costs and award-winning, nationally recognized school district.
Fair Oaks Ranch
Fair Oaks Ranch sits in between The Dominion and Boerne along 1-10. Like several of the other areas mentioned above, Fair Oaks is its own small city, it has a post office, police and fire department, and city council. One interesting thing to note: The City of Fair Oaks Ranch has some of the lowest city tax rates in the state!
School children who live in Fair Oaks Ranch funnel into the Boerne Independent School District.
