Congratulations on your recent wedding! Now that the planning is over, we bet you’re ready for some rest, relaxation, and happily ever after.
Although getting married is a magical time in anyone’s life, it does come with a lot of tedious paperwork, especially when you’re ready to change your name. After all, it is a legal union as well as a spiritual one.
Once you’re ready to legally change your last name, here’s what you’ll need.
Documents:
- Official Marriage License
- Another form of I.D. like a passport or Driver’s License
Steps:
Once you have an official Marriage License, you will need to change your Social Security information first before you can change other legal documents. Before heading to the office in person, print and fill out an application for a new Social Security card. You can either mail the application along with your Marriage License and another form of identification, or you can visit your local office to deliver the items in person. All documents will be returned to you.
When you receive your new SS card you’ll be able to request a new Driver’s License, Passport, etc. with your new last name. You’ll most likely have to personally visit your local DMV to request a new license because of name change. When you go, make sure you bring your Marriage License, your current license, and your new Social Security card.
Changing your Social Security card and Driver’s License aren’t the only documents you’ll need to change with your new last name. Don’t forget about your bank accounts and credit cards, utility accounts, Voter’s Registration card, and employee payroll information!
Yes, it’s a lot to remember, but don’t worry. It’s all doable! The best part is now you’ll have more places to flaunt your new last name. Congratulations.
