Fiesta Top 10

Whether you are new to San Antonio or born and raised, the one thing you probably know is that the season is right for FIESTA!  Fiesta is basically when the city shuts itself down for a week-and-a-half long party to celebrate and commemorate the heroes of both the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto.  Other cities can certainly learn from our long-standing traditions and respect for those who came before us.

But, since when has San Antonio needed an excuse to party?  Dust off your flower wreaths, throw on your embroidered shirts, and get ready to SHOW YOUR SHOES at these top 10 Fiesta events that are right around the corner!

10. Battle of Flowers Parade

April 26, 2019

Ticketed event, Family Friendly

Did you know that the Battle of Flowers Parade is the only parade in the parade in the country to be planned and directed by women and is second in size only to the Tournament of Roses Parade?  I would say that deserves a shout out or two!  Join the parade route on East Grayson and Broadway by the Pig Stand for the best view of all the marching bands and parade queens!

9.  Fiesta Carnival

April 18-28, 2019

Free Event, Family Friendly

The fiesta carnival is where all the cool kids go to swing high in the air, ride the Ferris Wheel, shoot the target for the big teddy, and make out behind the funnel cake cart.  This event, taking place in the Alamodome parking lot C, is family friendly, but remember that after dark people get crazier and will do anything to get that goldfish in the bag!

8. Fiesta® Fiesta at Hemisphere

April 18, 2019

Family Friendly

Fiesta® Fiesta is the official opening and kick-off event to Fiesta San Antonio. Hemisphere Park will light up with thousands of glittering bulbs as you mix with Fiesta Royalty, trade for your favorite Fiesta medals, and break cascarones (gently now) on your best friends’ unsuspecting head.

7. Fiesta Especial 5K & Parade

This inclusive event run by disABILITYsa celebrates those of all abilities and takes place in the City of Windcrest.  Runners as well as those who use adaptive devices are encouraged to participate.  The 5K and 1 mile dash are followed by a parade and activities for all.  The parade is free to attend, and there is a $35/$25 entry fee for the race.

6. Texas Cavaliers River Parade

April 22, 2019

Ticketed event, Family Friendly

This parade is anything but normal, as you will see a variety of strange costumes, décor, and royalty floating by.  Led by King Antonio down the San Antonio River, this parade raise money for children’s charities throughout the city, and this year’s theme is “Magnificent Missions.”   It promises to be a great time for the young and the young at heart!

5. Chili Queens Cook-off

April 28, 2019

Free event, Adults Only, 18+

Putting a new twist on the historic Chili Queens of Texas, these Queens will knock your socks off, not only with their amazing chili, but with their tacky outfits, too!  Prizes go to the best chili AND the most fashion-challenged.  Drinks, food, and dancing make this event a MUST for adults.  Bring your dancing shoes as this one takes place right on the Bonham Exchange dance floor.

4. Fiesta Pooch Parade

April 27, 2019

Ticketed event, Family AND Pet Friendly

Therapy Animals of San Antonio sponsors this fido-friendly event.  The costume contest and 2.6 mile walk through Alamo Heights celebrates your furry friend during Fiesta and the cause of healing through interaction with animals. Proceeds support therapy animal programs in the area.

3. King William Fair

April 27, 2019

Ticketed event, Family AND pet friendly

This event is a one-stop-shop for art, food, music, and culture all with the view of the beautiful and historic King William District.  Shop through craft booths, listen and dance to the beats of funky bands, or sit back and enjoy a glass of wine with your pooch.  This is a great way to spend the day chillaxing between parades.

2. Fiesta Flambeau® Parade

April 27, 2019

Ticketed Event, Family Friendly

A favorite of mine, the Flambeau® Parade is in its 70th year of celebration, and this year focuses its theme on the 300th anniversary of San Antonio. The UT Longhorn Band will lead a beautiful array of floats, royalty, and performers down the lighted parade route.  Don’t miss this one, it’s a beautiful way to spend an evening, and one of the most exciting events of Fiesta!

1. Night in Old San Antonio (NIOSA®)

April 23-26, 2019

Ticketed Event, Family Friendly (kind-of)

Hands down the best event in Fiesta (in the world according to me), NIOSA® is basically a walk down the oldest streets in San Antonio while you drink and eat as much as possible (make sure to get the chicken on a stick ASAP).  Different areas of La Villita take on the personalities of all the different heritages represented in San Antonio, celebrating the music, food, drink, and traditions of that culture.  This event is billed as family friendly, but I wouldn’t suggest taking the little ones…it can get crowded and fierce in there, especially on Thursday (college night).  Enter at your own risk, and have a great time!
